Gold may be synonymous with women's ornaments, but a scientific study has found that, biologically, men need it more. The research spanning two decades has revealed that gold content in sperm cells is essential for fertility for men. The study, led by Dr. K P Skandhan, also concluded that a low concentration or sheer absence of gold - which is mostly present in a tri-metal complex form along with zinc and copper - adversely affects motility of sperms and even leads to infertility in men. The research has been published in the Alexandria Journal of Medicine, Egypt.
The study claimed that normal sperm cells had a gold content of 17.66 micro-gram per deciliter (mg/dcl). It was observed that in seminal fluid with sperms which were low in count and lesser motile, the gold concentration dipped to 11.5 mg/dcl. Semen with low sperm count had a gold concentration of only 6 mg/dcl.
"Though gold is a non-reactive metal, it may be one of several elements contributing to a favourable medium for sperm motility and survival. We observed that if the amount of gold decreases, motility in sperms, which is key for fertility, too decreases", said Skandhan.
"The unpublished data shows that the ayurveda drug acts positively on the sperm, increasing number of sperms in action and hiking the motility to high grade", he said.
