MAN WITH 95% BURNS SAVED TWINS' SKIN.

A man who had suffered burns over 95% of his body, putting him on the verge of death, was saved by a skin transplant from his identical twin in a world-first operation, French doctors said on 23rd November, 2017 (Thursday). The 33-year-old man, identified only as Franck, received skin grafted from his brother Eric's skull, back and thighs. Receiving a transplant from a genetically identical twin eliminates the risk of seeing the recipient's body reject 'foreign' material from an unrelated donor. Usually in burn cases, the skin of a deceased donor is used, and the donor skin is typically rejected within weeks. That is usually enough time for new skin to start growing or to be harvested from elsewhere on the patient's body.
Twin-on twin skin transplants have been done before, but this was the first to cover such a large surface area, said Maurice Mimoun, a surgeon at the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris, where the procedure was done. The previous record for such transplants involved a case where about 68% of the victim's body was burned. Franck was admitted to hospital last year after being burned in a work accident, and the first graft from his twin was done a week later, followed by about a dozen procedures.

A REASON TO AVOID EATING CAKE BATTER.

Spoiler alert: If you are already elbow-deep in holiday cake batter, you may just want to stop reading here. Tasting uncooked foods made with flour can make you dangerously ill, according to a study published on 23rd November, 2017 (Wednesday) in 'The New England Journal of Medicine'. The report confirms that a type of E coli bacteria previously discovered in wet environments like hamburger meat can also thrive in arid hosts. Because of concerns over raw eggs, precautions have long existed for licking batter-laced spoons and nibbling homemade cookie dough. But the new results expand both the array of raw goods to be concerned about - even homemade play-dough! - and the reasons to be vigilant.

THIS BREAD IS MADE OF CRICKETS.

A Finnish bakery and food service company launched on 23rd November, 2017 (Thursday) what it said was the world's first insect-based bread to be offered to consumers in stores. The bread, made from flour ground from dried crickets as well as wheat flour and seeds, contains more protein than normal wheat bread. Each loaf contains about seventy crickets and costs 3.99 euros (approximately Rs. 305), compared with 2-3 euros (Rs. 150-220) for a regular wheat loaf. "It offers consumers with a good protein source and also gives them an easy way to familiarise themselves with insect-based food", said Juhani Sibakov, Head of Innovation at Fazer Bakeries. The demand to find more food sources and a desire to treat animals more humanely have raised interest in using insects as a protein source in the West. In November 2017, Finland joined five other European countries - Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Denmark - in allowing insects to be raised and marketed for food use. Helsinki student Sara Koivisto said of the new bread, "I don't taste the difference...It tastes like bread".

THREE COFFEES A DAY DO MORE GOOD THAN HARM, SAYS STUDY.

People who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are more likely to see health benefits than harm, experiencing lower risks of premature death and heart disease than those who abstain, scienists said on Wednesday. The research collated evidence from over 200 studies.

HOW LIGHT POLLUTION IS KILLING THE NIGHT?

They were supposed to bring about an energy revolution - but the popularity of LED lights is driving an increase in light pollution worldwide, with dire consequences for human and animal health, researchers said on Wednesday. The study published in the journal 'science advances', is based on satellite data showing that the Earth's night is getting brighter, and artificially lit outdoor surfaces grew at a pace of 2.2 percent per year from 2012 to 2016. Experts say that's a problem because nighttime lights are known to disrupt our body clocks and raise the risks of cancer, diabetes and depression. As for animals, these lights can kill - whether by attracting insects or disorienting migrating birds or sea turtles. The issue isn't just the LED lights themselves, which are more efficient because they need far less electricity to provide the same amount of light, explained lead author Chris Kyba, a physicist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences. Rather, it's that people keep installing more and more lights, he told reporters on a conference call to discuss the research.
"And so all of those new uses of light offset, to some extent, the savings that you had". Experts call this the 'rebound effect', and it can be seen with fuel-efficient cars, too. People may buy a car that requires less fuel, then decide to drive it more often or move further from work, lengthening their commute. The study was based on the first-ever radiometer designed especially for night-lights, called the Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The VIIRS is mounted on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite named Suomi NPP, which has been orbiting Earth since October 2011. Researchers only analysed night-time lights during October, to avoid any increase from lights during the Christmas season. "With few exceptions, growth in lighting occurred throughout South America, Africa and Asia", said the report.
Declines in lighting were rare, but were noticeable in war-torn places like Syria and Yemen. Some of the world's brightest areas, including Italy. Netherlands, Spain and the United States, were all relatively stable. But even though Milan, for example, made the switch to LED lights and saw a drop in radiance over the 2012-2016 period, there were increases elsewhere in Italy. "The fact that we didn't see the country get darker means that there were new lights in other places, or else brighter lights that were in some other cities installed  that make up for this difference", said Kyba. Excesses night-time light not only harms natural habitats and makes stargazing impossible, it also costs nearly seven billion dollars annually in 'negative impacts on wildlife, health, astronomy, and wasted energy", according to a 2010 study in the journal Ecological Economics. Experts say solutions include turning lights off when people leave an area, and choosing LED lights that are amber instead of blue or violet, since these tend to be the most harmful to animals and humans.

HOMEO TREATMENT FOR HAMSTRING INJURY IN SPORTS.

A day watching a cricket match would involve the batsman scurrying to the other end with a sudden start, rapid acceleration of every movement of running and finally lunge forward to scrape his bat against the crease. Well, every such motion is enough to cause a hamstring injury. Hamstrings are thick, bulky muscles in the back of the upper leg which run the course from the buttocks or th hips where they are and along the leg into almost the back of the knee. These are attached to the bone with a thick, ropy structures called as the tendons. Any part of these muscles - right from the attachment of the tendon and along the course of the muscle - is prone to injury in athletes where there is involvement of running etc. When there is a sudden lunging, running or jumping, it puts a pressure on the tissues of the muscle causing a spasm or even worse a tear.
There is a spasm of the muscles in the back of the thigh which completely immobilises the sportsman then and there. If there is a sudden pop-like-sound during such activities, it could be due a tear in one of the fibres. Against that is at the site where the tendon is attached to the soft, bulky muscle. But in the athletically active, there could be a Grade III tear too. More often than not if the sportsman begins his job for the day without enough warm up or conditioning, or under circumstances like batting for a prolonged period of time especially in a humid environment that only saps away the electrolytes from the system; the hamstring muscles are more prone to injury. As such the diagnosis of such an injury does not involve any investigations because if the injury has happened during the course of play with a grab in the thigh completely immobilising him for a few minutes and there is a limp in the gait; it has to be construed as a hamstring injury. If there is a bluish swelling underneath the site it could be due to more than a spasm - it could be a muscle tear.
To start with, rest, ice, compression and elevation of the affected area go a long way in giving some relief to the person. But pressure with ice over the muscles for minutes after the injury would help him get back on the field, if its is only a spasm. If there is a tear rest of about four to six weeks period, away from action is required. During this phase as the tear heals, there could be a formation of a thick band of tissue at the site that may actually limit the movement in the long run and care with proper physiotherapy needs to be taken during the recovery. Homeopathic medicine has good remedies like Mag. Phos. which when given during an acute phase would relieve the spasm at the earliest and remedies like Arnica, Rhus tox, Cimcifuga, Caulophyllum, Ruta, Ac. Sulph., etc. can help the fibres heal at the earliest so that the sportsman is back on the field to the best of his ability only.

SLEEP YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHIER HEART.

Bragging to friends that you have the ability to sleep only for a few hours every night, and getting away with it is a stunt that many youngsters pull off. One does not realise, then, that a disturbed circadian rhythm could actually be hazardous and even mortally perilous. One cannot stress enough, the irrevocable role sleep plays in an individual's general health. Dr. Vikas Agrawal, ENT specialist and sleep apnea surgeon reiterates, "Worldwide research has suggested that insufficient sleep could lead to many lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity, coronary artery disease and heart attacks. Presence of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Also, bot short duration and long duration of sleep has been associated with a greater risk of dying from coronary heart disease".
Indians are more prone to heart attacks: Getting the right amount of sleep and reducing unhealthy lifestyle behaviours is extremely important for a healthy heart. Dr. Agarwal says, "Indians are genetically more prone to get heart disease, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is more important for us".
Lack of sleep leads to coronary artery disease: Good quality sleep decreases heart rate and blood pressure, thus decreasing work of heart. Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora, senior cardiologist says, "Lack of sleep keeps the heart rate and blood pressure elevated. Both are linked to increased incidence of heart disease. Lack of sleep increases insulin resistance and the risk of Type II diabetes mellitus and also increases C-reactive protein are associated with higher incidence of coronary artery disease".
Pay attention to quality of sleep: The quality of your sleep directly affects the quality of your waking life, including your productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and even your weight. Dr. Nilesh Gautam, senior cardiologist says, "Sleep isn't merely a time when your body shuts off. While you rest, your brain stays busy, overseeing a wide variety of biological maintenance that keeps your body running in top condition, preparing you for the day ahead".
Duration of sleep is also important: Of course, the syaing "Early to bed and early to rise" still holds, but sleep specialists state that it is not so much the time, but the duration and regularity of sleep, that is important.
Melatonin is a hormone secreted approximately one hour prior to sleep, which helps us sleep better. If our sleep timings are irregular, the melatonin secretion is affected, which in turn disturbs our sleep.
Health problems due to incomplete sleep:
  1. Coronary artery disease.
  2. Hypertension.
  3. Diabetes.
  4. Stroke.
  5. Poor memory and cognition.
  6. Excessive day time sleepiness.
  7. Excessive fatigue, lethargy and lack of motivation.
  8. Obesity.
  9. Depression.
  10. Moodiness and Irritability.
  11. Reduced creativity and problem-solving skills.
  12. Reduced immunity, frequent colds and infection.
  13. Concentration and memory problems.
  14. Weight gain.
  15. Impaired motor skills and increased risk of accidents.
  16. Difficulty making decisions.
According a to a recent study report and findings in Indian context, urban Indian spends more time at work and less time for sleep unlike a rural Indian. More work is typically related to sedentary activity, unhealthy dietary habit and more smoking or tobacco consumption. All these have resulted into more incidence of coronary artery disease and death in urban population compared to rural population as evidenced by multiple studies.
Adults sleeping less than six hours had:
  1. 48 percent increased risk of developing or dying from coronary heart disease.
  2. 15 percent greater risk of developing or dying from stroke.
Adults sleeping more than none to eleven hours:
  1. 38 percent increased risk of developing or dying from CHD.
  2. 65 percent increased risk of stroke.
Sleep helps repair your body. Your body produces extra protein molecules while you are sleeping that helps strengthen your ability to fight infection and stay healthy. Sleep reduces stress. A good night's sleep can help lower blood pressure and elevated levels of stress hormones, which are a natural result of today's fast paced lifestyle. Proper sleep improves your memory. Sleep helps control body weight issues. It reduces the occurrence of mood disorders.

LIFESTYLE HABITS TO REV UP YOUR LIBIDO.

Don't let your lifestyle choices affect your bedroom performance. Whether you did like to believe it or not, a number of factors can be blamed for a low libido. Here are three things that will give a much needed boost to your sex drive...

  1. Watch what you eat: What you put on your plate can also have a lot of repercussions on your sex life. Studies say that following a healthy diet not only improves your overall performance in the bedroom. Those suffering from cardiovascular ailments, especially, are known to suffer from low libido. Obesity, hormonal imbalances and diabetes is also said to hamper your sex life.
  2. Lose some weight: When you are physically fit, not only will you feel more encouraged to shed your inhibitions in front of your partner but also discover that your libido increases. Exercising is said to improve blood circulation and result in your body producing more endorphins - known to increase energy and feelings of happiness.
  3. Lower your stress levels: While stress is inevitable in today's age, how you deal with it is completely up to you. No matter how stressed you are, learn how to de-stress yourself because left unchecked, stress can decimate your libido. Keep time aside for activities that make you happy and help you unwind. Once you learn to relax and deal with stress, your sex life will automatically improve.

DON'T LET STRESS TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE. ACT NOW!

First things first: not all stress is bad for you. There are two main kinds of stress - acute stress and chronic stress. Acute stress is the reaction to an immediate threat, commonly known as the 'fight or flight' response. Some degree of acute stress is desirable as it primes your brain for performance and spontaneity, however, chronic stress which most of us might be facing day in and day out is dangerous. Chronic stress and cortisol (stress hormone) can damage the brain. It can trigger long-term changes in brain structure and function. Young people who are exposed to chronic stress early in life are prone to problems such as anxiety, mood disorders as well as learning difficulties.
Elevated levels of cortisol can generate over-production of myelin-producing cells (which control human impulses) and fewer neurons than normal. The hippocampus, the portion of the brain which regulates memory and emotions, shrinks under extended periods of acute stress. This results in an excess of myelin-and too much white matter-in some areas of the brain. The 'stress hormone' cortisol is believed to create a domino effect that hard-wires pathways between the hippocampus and amygdala, (which controls fear responses) in a way that create a constant state of fight-or-flight.
Weight gain, mood swings, poor sleep, short attention span, and memory issues are common signs of stress due to elevated cortisol. Regular physical Activity and mindful meditation are two effective ways to reduce stress.

DON'T LET A MIGRAINE TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE.

Unless you suffer from a migraine, you will never really know how debilitating it can be. Migraines affect millions around the globe and can be triggered by the smallest (and strangest) of things. These include changes in the weather, food items, over-powering scents and several other things. A migraine attack is different for everyone, which is why treating it is never really easy. You need to figure out what triggers off your migraine so that you can deal with it effectively...
  1. If smells are your biggest concern, make sure that you stay away from perfumes, room fresheners, scented candles, strong detergents, or anything that emits a strong odour.
  2. As strange as it may sound, certain foods can also cause bad migraine attacks. These include certain cheeses, nuts, citrus fruits, chocolate, pickled or marinated food, types of beans, raisins, foods that contain MSG, avocados, Caffeinated items and alcohol. The best thing, of course, is to steer clear of these foods.
  3. Your monthly cycle can also be a cause for severe migraines. Usually taking place just a few days before the start of your period or during it, some women even get an attack when they ovulate. Your migraine medication will help ease the discomfort caused.
  4. Stress is one of the most common reasons for migraines. This is because emotions such as uncertainty, concern, anxiety and heartache can discharge brain chemicals that are known to cause migraines.
  5. An irregular sleep schedule can also cause migraine attacks. Hence, it is important to wake up and sleep at roughly the same time daily and ensure that you get the requisite seven to eight hours of sleep daily.

YOUR DRINK GLASS MAY BE TOXIC.

Enamelled glass containers, including those for liquor, may contain potentially harmful levels of lead and cadmium, a study warned on 06th November, 2017 (Monday). Researchers at the University of Plymouth, UK tested 72 glass products, including beer and wine glasses. In some cases, the concentration of lead was more than 1,000 times higher than the limit.

WHEN STRESSED, PARENTS FEED KIDS JUNK FOOD.

On days when parents feel stressed or depressed, kids are less likely to get homemade food for dinner, a US study suggests. Beyond just serving up more fast food and frozen dinners, parents are also more likely to pressure kids to clean their plates on days when they are not in a great mood. "One potential explanation for these findings is that parents who have a stressful day at work, school or home or who feel depressed throughout the day may be overwhelmed and not feel like making a family meal, and so they opt for pre-prepared foods and make less homemade foods", said lead study author Jerica Berge of the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.
"In addition, if parents feel stressed or depressed, they may also pressure their children to eat more at the meal because they don't want them to waste food, or because they are worried their child is not getting enough food to eat", Berge said.
For the study researchers observed 150 children aged 5 to 7 years at home with their families and used several methods to assess how parents' moods influenced what foods went on the table.
Among other things, researchers did home visits to observe meal planning and preparation and examined data from food diaries, surveys and interviews.

DIABETIC WOMEN AT GREATER HEART DISEASE RISK.

Women with Type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to have coronary heart disease compared to men, according to new American Heart Association scientific statement. "Cardiovascular disease may be more deadly for women with Type 2 diabetes than it is for men", said Judith G. Regensteiner, chair of the statement writing group and director of the Centre for Women's Health Research at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. While scientists do not fully understand how the inherent hormonal differences between men and women affect risk, they do know that 'some risk factors for heart disease and stroke affect women differently than men and there are disparities in how these risk factors are treated'.
The statement said that the women with Type 2 diabetes have heart attacks at earlier ages than men; are more likely to die after a first heart attack than men; and are less likely to undergo procedures to open clogged arteries, such as angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting than men. It also points out that African-American and Hispanic women with Type 2 diabetes are disproportionately affected by coronary artery disease and stroke as compared to men with Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with the body not producing enough insulin to control blood sugar levels. While the new scientific statement clarifies some diabetes-related sex differences in heart and blood vessel disease, more research is necessary, according to the authors.

SMALL LIFESTYLE CHANGES THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.

When it comes to your health, no matter how careful you are, there may still be things that you may not be doing correctly. And it's these small things, say experts, that can actually make a big difference in your health.
  • While brushing twice a day and using a mouthwash is a part of your regime, dentists say that flossing is equally important - and something that a large number of people seem to avoid doing. Flossing expels harmful bacteria from your mouth, which can cause plaque in the long run. And plaque can gnaw away at the bone that helps keep your teeth together, leading to decay and other dental problems. Not only this, when this bacteria enters your bloodstream, it can actually worsen the symptoms of hypertension and diabetes.
  • When it comes to your diet, don't just stick to the 'three meals a day' routine. An increasing number of nutritionists reckon that having smaller meals at regular intervals during the day is far better than sticking to three large ones. Not only will this improve your metabolism but also lower the chances of binge eating - a win-win situation.
  • Instead of eating your meals at the office cafeteria, spend some time each morning packing a lunch box. It doesn't matter if you eat from the 'health counter', nothing beats the hygiene and quality of a home-cooked meal. Plan your menu every Sunday so that you don't fret over what to prepare each morning. Alternatively, pack your lunch box a night prior so that all you need to do is to take it from the refrigerator and leave for work.
  • Walking is something that we take for granted. And we don't realise the numerous health benefits it offers. The more you walk, the more calories you burn - that's a given. So, make it a habit to walk short distances instead of hopping into your car or a cab. Take the staircase instead of the elevator. Go for a brisk walk thrice a week at a time that suits you. You will notice the difference in your energy levels in just a few weeks.
  • Pursue a new hobby. Or take up something that you used to enjoy doing, but gave up because of lack of time. When you spend time doing things that unwind you physically, you will find that your mental outlook also improves. This is because your body is in a state of relaxation and will be able to perform your daily tasks better.
  • Women, when was the last time you did some kegel exercises? Don't wait till you actually suffer from urinary incontinence to start doing these exercises that strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. Make it a habit to do them at least once a day. The right way to do it would be to contract your pelvic muscles and hold them for five seconds. Repeat this action as often as you can.
  • Working hard or being busy aren't bad things. But not giving yourself enough time to do things that help you unwind, is. While pursuing goals, reaching targets and meeting deadlines gives you a high, there are times when you need to slow down and simply go easy on yourself. Even if this means giving yourself 20 minutes each day to do absolutely nothing or doing something that you love, it will make a big difference in the way you face each day.
  • Simple foods like nuts, fruits and leafy greens can do wonders for your health if had regularly. These contain essential nutrients that are great for the body. Make a conscious effort to curb your intake of fried and junk food. The less sugar you consume (and this includes the sugar in processed food), the more energetic and fit you will feel.
  • Go for regular checkups. You don't have to wait till something goes wrong to go to the doctor. yearly checks for overall health should include dental and eye checkups. This way you know about a deficiency or malady before it gets out of hand.

BEING UNHAPPY WON'T KILL YOU FOR SURE.

It is the disease that makes you unhappy and not the other way round, say researchers, adding that the widespread but mistaken belief that unhappiness makes you ill came from studies that had simply confused people. In a study comprising one million women, researchers found that happiness itself has no direct effect on mortality. "Illness makes you unhappy, but unhappiness itself doesn't make you ill. We found no direct effect of unhappiness or stress on mortality, even in a 10-year study of a million women", said lead author Bette Liu. Life-threatening poor health can cause unhappiness, and for this reason unhappiness is associated with increased mortality.
In addition, smokers tend to be unhappier than non-smokers. However, after taking account of previous ill health, smoking, and other lifestyle and socio-economic factors, the investigators found that unhappiness itself was no longer associated with increased mortality. As in other studies, it was associated with deprivation, smoking, lack of exercise and not living with a partner. The strongest associations, however, were that the women who were already in poor health tended to say that they were unhappy, stressed, not in control, and not relaxed. "Many still believe that stress or unhappiness can directly cause disease, but they are simply confusing 'cause and effect', added co-author Professor Richard Peto from University of Oxford.
Previous reports of reduced mortality being associated with happiness had not allowed properly for the strong effect of ill health on unhappiness and on stress. "Of course, people who are ill tend to be unhappier than those who are well, but the study shows that happiness and unhappiness do not themselves have any direct effect on death rates", he noted in a paper published in a journal.

SIGNS THAT POINT TOWARDS A HORMONAL IMBALANCE.

Everyone goes through a hormonal imbalance - women more than men - at some point in their lives. And chances are that you have often heard someone you know complain that they suffer from a hormonal imbalance. So, what exactly is it and what are the signs that you should watch out for?
What is a Hormonal Imbalance? - Whether you like it or not, hormones fluctuate. A wide number of things could cause an imbalance, hence it is first important to pinpoint what triggers off your hormones. Simply put, a hormonal imbalance can wreak havoc on your body's natural functioning, causing a number of health woes. Among the most common reasons listed are a problematic menstrual cycle, pregnancy, the type of contraception you may be using, menopause, thyroid problems or even diabetes. Apart from this, certain lifestyle choices can also throw your hormones off balance. Following an inconsistent diet, leading a very sedentary lifestyle and even not sleeping enough can lead to a fluctuation in your hormones.
Common signs to watch out for:
  • While feeling moody and irritable are characteristics that most women will readily identify with, if you notice (or someone points out to you) that you suffer from wild mood swings, oscillating from tremendous euphoria to crushing sadness, every other day, you could be suffering from a hormone disorder. Often diagnosed in menopausal women, you need to visit your doctor, who will conduct tests to determine the cause. Depression could be another indication of a disorder. Hence, instead of waiting for things to improve, it is advisable to seek professional help.
  • Unable to sleep properly? While it is normal to have slight sleep problems now and then, if you perpetually find yourself staring at the ceiling and counting sheep for hours, you may have a problem. Experts reckon that this occurs in a lot among women just before their monthly menstrual cycle. This could be attributed to the fact that there is a steep reduction in progesterone, a hormone known to help you relax. This, in turn, makes you anxious and affects your sleep. If you notice this pattern month after month, it is best you schedule an appointment with your family doctor.
  • While a large number of women heave a sigh of relief at bidding goodbye to teenage acne, a substantial number aren't so lucky. Adult acne, in several cases, can be attributed to a disturbed hormonal cycle. An odd pimple here and there is considered normal by dermatologists, who say this occurs due to variation in your hormones. However, being afflicted with heavy acne that leaves scars is a cause for concern. This is probably caused due to high levels of androgens (male hormones). When you have a high number of male hormones in your body, it causes (among other things) regular acne breakouts.
  • Your sex drive doesn't always have to be at full throttle. Everyone goes through highs and lows in the bed-room, but if there is a severe loss of libido, it's time to find out any underlying causes. A number of studies have proven that hormonal imbalances can cause your sex drive to take a nosedive. This happens because your estrogen levels decrease. Your doctor will prescribe medication or an estrogen vaginal cream as treatment.
  • Often, your body may be giving out signs of a hormone disorder, but you might have not noticed the symptoms. It is a good idea to give yourself a breast exam at least once a month so that any lumps or changes can be immediately studied. As you age, your breasts will get more tender, so make sure that you go for regular checkups. Another sign of a hormonal imbalance is vaginal dryness. Occurring mostly in women who are nearing menopause, this happens because of low estrogen levels, leading to dryness and, in turn, painful sex. Ask your doctor for a lubricant if the discomfort is unbearable.
  • Suffering from regular migraines or headaches around your menstrual cycle could be an indication of a hormonal disorder. Keep track of when these headaches occur - it will help your doctor figure out what could be triggering them and whether it is indeed a hormonal imbalance.
  • While gaining weight gets easier with, sudden weight gain could have several underlying causes. One of the first things you need to do is to get your thyroid checked. An out-of-control thyroid often causes severe hormonal changes and weight gain is just one of the symptoms.
  • Feeling constantly tired is also a sign of a hormone cycle that is not functioning properly. It could be attributed to hypothyroidism, which causes your metabolism to slow down drastically, making you feel sluggish and exhausted.

COMMANDMENTS TO LIVE BY FOR CONSISTENT WEIGHT LOSS.

Trying too hard to lose unwanted kilos and not getting the desired results? The answer is in the affirmative for most, because despite working out and following a diet, we do not end up losing as much weight as we want to. What many do not realise is that those seemingly little things that come to us as naturally as habit, might actually be the reasons we are putting on weight. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you want to see results in your weight-loss programme.
  1. Stop reaching for food all the time: Eat mini meals every two to three hours. This keeps your metabolism up and your body does not end up storing fat. Avoid grabbing that cookie/wafer or any finger food in between meals. You can't be actually hungry in less than two hours between meals. If you do, take up any activity that can distract you, like opting for a quick walk.
  2. Mindful eating is essential: When you are working and nibbling on French fries, you don't realise when an entire large pack is over. One can avoid this by being mindful of what one eats. Eat only when you are sitting down with your plate and there is no television or computer or phone to distract you. Mindfulness involves being in the moment - so think of the texture, colour and taste of the food on your plate. Chew every mouthful before you reach for the next morsel.
  3. Keep away from factors that encourage negative eating patterns: If you stuff your refrigerator with food that is not healthy (but might be yummy), chances are you will end up having all of it in a moment of weakness. So do not stock anything that you know you shouldn't be eating. Also, friends who urge you to have unhealthy snacks and meals should not be encouraged - stay away from them. Opt instead for a supportive group of friends who also lead a healthy lifestyle.
  4. Stop eating stuff in tins, cans and plastic bags: Gorging on over-processed food, including those that are frozen, pickled and laced with preservatives, will never allow you to lose weight. Drinking pre-packed juices and foods that claim to be healthy could lead to unwanted consumption of salt and sugar, both of which can be detrimental to your goal of weight loss. Rather, eat real food like organic fruits and vegetables that can help your body function at the optimum level. And when that happens, your body stops storing fat and you are your lean self without much struggle.
  5. Eat only when hungry: Eating more than you actually need is one of the major reasons for putting on weight. Nutritionists say that when sitting down for a meal, make sure you stop eating as soon as you are around 80% full, and not till you are bursting at the seams. You should learn to recognise that you have overeaten when you don't start to feel hungry in the next two to three hours (seeming to feel hungry due to stress or just craving something is not proper hunger). If you feel full three hours after your last meal, then it means you have stuffed yourself during the previous meal. Keep that in mind when you sit to eat again and stop before you are too full.
  6. Slow and steady wins the race: Practice all the above habits everyday. Do not be hard on yourself and expect overnight results. Consistently following a healthy lifestyle will always hasten your progress towards your goal of a better life. If you miss following something once in a while, it is OK - just make sure you do it diligently the next time.

FOUND: CHEMICAL IN THE BRAIN THAT SHUTS OUT BAD MEMORIES.

Scientists have identified a key chemical in the brain that allows us to suppress unpleasant memories, a finding that may pave the way for treating patients of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression or schizophrenia who experience such thoughts persistently. "Our ability to control our thoughts is fundamental to our well-being", said Michael Anderson of the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. "When this capacity breaks down, it causes some of the most debilitating symptoms of psychiatric diseases: intrusive memories, images, hallucinations, ruminations and pathological and persistent worries", said Anderson. "These are all key symptoms of mental illnesses such as PTSD, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety", he added.
Anderson likens our ability to intervene and stop ourselves from retrieving certain memories and thoughts to stopping a physical action. A region at the front of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex is known to play a key role in controlling our actions and has more recently been shown to play a similarly important role in stopping our thoughts. The prefrontal cortex acts as a master regulator, controlling other brain regions - the motor cortex for actions and the hippocampus for memories. In the study, published in the journal 'Nature Communications', scientists used a task known as the 'Think/No-Think' procedure to identify a significant new brain process that enables the prefrontal cortex to successfully inhibit our thoughts.
In the task, participants learn to associate a series of words with a paired, but otherwise unconnected, word, for example ordeal/roach and moss/north. In the next stage, they were asked to recall the associated word if the cue is green or to suppress it if the cue is red; in other words, when shown 'ordeal' in red, they were asked to stare at the word but to stop themselves thinking about the associated thought 'roach'. Using a combination of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, the researchers were able to observe what was happening within key regions of the brain as the participants tried to inhibit their thoughts.
The ability to inhibit unwanted thoughts relies on a neurotransmitter known as GABA. It is the main 'Inhibitory' neurotransmitter in the brain, and its release by one nerve cell can suppress activity in other cells to which it is connected.

C-SECTION BIRTHS ALTERING COURSE OF EVOLUTION.

Regular use of caesarean sections to deliver babies is affecting the human evolution, according to a new study. An increasing number of mothers now need surgery to deliver a baby due to their narrow pelvis size, researchers said. Researchers estimate cases where the baby cannot fit down the birth canal have increased from 30 in 1,000 in the 1960s to 36 in 1,000 births today. Historically, these genes would not have been passed from mother to child as both would have died in labour. According to Dr. Philipp Mitteroecker from the University of Vienna, there is a long standing question in the understanding of human evolution. "Why is the rate of birth problems, in particular what we call fetopelvic disproportion - basically that the baby does not fit through the maternal birth canal - why is this rate so high?" he said.
"Without modern medical intervention such problems often were lethal and this is, from an evolutionary perspective, selection. Women with a narrow pelvis would not have survived birth 100 years ago. They do now and pass on their genes encoding for a narrow pelvis to their daughters", said Mitteroecker. It has been a long standing evolutionary question why the human pelvis has not grown wider over the years. The head of a human baby is large compared with other primates, meaning animals such as chimps can give birth relatively easily, 'BBC News' reported.
Researchers devised a mathematical model using data from the WHO and other large birth studies. They found opposing evolutionary forces. One is a trend towards larger new-borns, which are more healthy. However, if they grow too large, they get stuck during labour, which would have proved disastrous for mother and baby, and their genes would not be passed on. "One side of this selective force - namely the trend towards smaller babies - has vanished due to caesarean sections", said Mitteroecker.

THE FASTER YOU EAT, THE MORE KILOS YOU GAIN?

Are you wondering why your waistline is expanding? Don't watch what you eat; watch how you eat. Accordingly to preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2017, people who eat slowly are less likely to become obese or develop metabolic syndrome, a cluster of heart disease, diabetes and stroke risk factors. Metabolic syndrome occurs when someone has any of the risk factors that include abdominal obesity, high fasting blood sugar, high blood pressure, high triglycerides and/or low HDL cholesterol, said Japanese researchers.
The researchers evaluated 642 men and 441 women, average age 51.2 years, who did not have metabolic syndrome in 2008. They divided the participants into three groups depending on how they described their usual eating speed: slow, normal or fast. After five years, the researchers found that fast eaters were more likely (11.6 percent) to develop metabolic syndrome than normal eaters (6.5 percent) or slow eaters (2.3 percent). Fast eating is associated with weight gain, higher blood glucose and larger waistline. Author Takayuki Yamaji from Hiroshima University said, "When people eat fast they tend not to feel full and are more likely to overeat. Eating fast causes bigger glucose fluctuation, which can lead to insulin resistance. We also believe our research would apply to a United States population".

NEW THERAPY FOR LEUKAEMIA IDENTIFIED.

Stanford scientists have identified a molecule that can be targeted to cure leukaemia - the most common form of cancer in childhood. The therapy is similar to but distinct from CD-19-targeted chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, in which a patient's T-cells are genetically modified to target a molecule called Cd-19 on the surface of the cancer cells. This therapy was recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of some types of blood cancers, according to study published in the journal Nature Medicine.
The therapy genetically modifies a patient's T-cells to target a different molecule called CD-22, scientists at the Stanford University in the United States said. The approach is helpful because the cancer cells of some patients who undergo CD-19-targeted CAR T-cell therapy stop expressing the CD-19 molecule on their cell surfaces. CAR T-cell therapy relies on a patient's own T cells - a type of immune cell that can be a powerful killing machine.

NATURAL WAYS TO HAVE A HEALTHIER DAY.

The first thing that you drink in the morning can have a day-long impact on your body, say experts. Try out these natural drinks to keep you healthy and refreshed.
Lemon Tea: Squeeze half a lemon in a glass of warm water and have it first thing in the morning to remain fresh and alert through the day. Lemon water helps keep the body hydrated, aids metabolism, cleanses the liver and provides relief from sore throat as well. This water also flushes toxins out of the body and helps you maintain glowing skin. Remember, do not add sugar.
Ginger Tea: A cup of ginger tea instead of coffee or regular tea is a great way to kick-start the day. Boil a cup of water along with a piece of ginger for a few minutes. Then add a tea bag. Pour it into a cup after a few minutes, squeeze in a few drops of lemon and add a dash of honey. This concoction is a natural stimulant, and is a great way to start the day on a detox note.
Mint: Mint is natural stimulant, which freshens your breath and increases alertness. Try to include a few mint leaves in your morning diet by preparing a mint drink. Crush a few mint leaves along with lemon juice. Add water and the drink is ready. One can even try a green smoothie with mint, yogurt and honey. It is a great stimulant.
Fenugreek Water: Soak a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, remove the seeds and have the water on an empty stomach. This helps keep high cholesterol levels in check. This water also helps diabetics control their sugar level to a great extent. This can be had in addition to the medicines that they take.

BEAUTY TRICKS THAT CAN BE PULLED OFF WITH COCONUT OIL.

Coconut oil has been a part of everyone's household for decades now. And there are multiple ways in which the oil can be used.
  1. It is a very effective way to remove even the most resistant waterproof makeup. Just apply some of it to your face and remove it with a cotton pad.
  2. It is used as a breath freshener too. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of coconut oil clear up the germs in your mouth. Gargle with a spoonful of it for a few minutes.
  3. It helps ward off stretch marks. It can also be used as a preventive measure to keep blisters and dark spots from forming.
  4. Coconut oil can also be used as a whitening toothpaste. Just add some baking soda to the oil and rub the mixture on your teeth.
  5. It can also be used as a body scrub. Just add some salt to it and apply it for a naturally soft and supple skin.
  6. It also helps with premature greying of hair. Take some curry leaves, grind them and add some water to make a paste. Add the paste to two cups of coconut oil and heat the mixture till the moisture evaporates and let it cool down. Store the mixture in a bottle and apply it two-three times on alternate days.

NIGHT SHIFTS AT WORK LINKED WITH BREAST CANCER RISK: STUDY.

Women who work in night shifts may be at an increased risk of developing breast cancer, as artificial light blocks a hormone that plays a key role in suppressing growth of tumours, claims a study. The study showed that women who were pre-menopausal and were current or past smokers, and who live in areas with high levels of outdoor light at night, were at risk of developing breast cancer. "In our modern industrialised society, artificial lighting is nearly ubiquitous. Our results suggest that this widespread exposure to outdoor lights during night time hours could represent a novel risk factor for breast cancer", said lead author Peter James, Assistant Professor at Harvard University.
Melatonin, a hormone produced in the human brain, appears to suppress the growth of breast cancer tumours, but exposure to light may decrease its levels, leading to increased breast cancer risk, Peter said, citing previous studies.
For the new study, the team looked at data from nearly 1,10,000 women and linked data from satellite images of Earth taken at night to residential addresses for each study participant, as well as considering the influence of night shift work. The results showed that women exposed to the highest levels of outdoor light at night - those in the top fifth - had an estimated 14 percent increased risk of breast cancer, as compared with women in the bottom fifth of exposure.
As levels of outdoor light at night increased, so did breast cancer rates, the researchers said, but acknowledged that further work is required to confirm the study findings and clarify potential mechanisms.

POTATOES UP RISK OF HYPERTENSION: STUDY.

Eating four or more servings of boiled, baked, or mashed potatoes, as well as French fries, a week may increase your risk of High Blood Pressure, a new study has warned. Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School is the United States suggest that replacing one serving a day of potatoes with one serving of a non-starchy vegetable is associated with a lower risk of developing hypertension. Researchers followed over 1,87,000 men and women from three large US studies for over 20 years to arrive at the conclusion. Dietary intake, including the frequency of potato consumption, was assessed using a questionnaire. Hypertension was reported by participants based on diagnosis by a health professional, researchers said. After taking into account several other risk factors for hypertension, researchers found that four or five servings a week of baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes was associated with an increased risk of hypertension.
Higher consumption of French fries was also associated with an increased risk of hypertension in women and men. However, consumption of potato chips (crisps) was associated with no increased risk, researchers said. According to them, potatoes have a high glycaemic index compared with other vegetables, and can thus trigger a sharp rise in Blood Sugar levels, which could be one explanation for the findings.

PARACETAMOL UPS RISK OF ASTHMA.

Babies given Calpol or other forms of paracetamol are twice as likely to develop asthma. Those fed the medicines in the first fifteen months of their life are also at much higher risk of allergies when they are older. Researchers attribute the surge in childhood asthma over the last fifty years to increasing number of parents giving their kids paracetamol for pain or fever relief, the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy reports. A study found that babies who had Calpol or similar medicines in the first fifteen months were twice as likely to have suffered wheezing and other symptoms of asthma by the time they were six, said the Daily Mail
Allergies are also on the rise and since 2001 the number of children receiving treatment for some form of allergic reaction or intolerance has increased by twenty five percent. Researchers at Otago University in Wellington studied 1,500 kids up to the age of six in Christchurch, New Zealand. They found that ninety five percent of the children were given paracetamol - and were far more likely to suffer from asthma or allergies. Prof. Julian Crane, who led the study said: "The major finding is that children who used paracetamol before the age of fifteen months (90 percent) were more than three times as likely to become sensitised to allergens and twice as likely to develop symptoms of asthma at six years old than children not using paracetamol".

STUDY: VITAMIN D, CALCIUM NOT REQUIRED.

Vitamin D and Calcium supplements are unnecessary for most people and may be harmful to some, a study commissioned by the US and Canadian governments has found. While Vitamin D and Calcium are important for bone health, most residents of North America get enough of both through a diet that includes fortified foods and sun exposure, a committee found. The committee found while most people get enough calcium through diet, girls between 9 and 18 can probably gain health advantages through use of supplements. While post-menopausal women taking extra calcium may get too much, raising risks for kidney stones, it said.

SCARY SIDE EFFECTS OF TEA THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW.

Tea is such a comfort drink! Almost all of us want to snuggle with a hot cuppa, along with a plateful of pakora when it rains. Tea is the first thing we think of while returning home after a long day at work. In fact, it is also used as a cure for sniffles and light fever. Most of us swear by our adrak wali chai and tulsi wali chai. But there is a dark side to this comfort drink. It can also cause health issues in some people and if taken in uncontrolled proportions. Here is a list of some facts that will give you creeps.
  1. Sleep Disorder and Diuretic Effect: Caffeine in tea can lead to a mild diuretic effect if taken excessively. It can also cause sleep disorders.
  2. Constipation: Theophylline a chemical in the tea can lead to a dehydrating effect during digestion, causing constipation. Many believe that taking tea in the morning helps us to have a clear bowel movement, while drinking excess amounts of tea can cause constipation.
  3. Anxiety and Restlessness: The caffeine is one of the most popular mood-enhancing drug and it has some good as well as bad effects on our body. Consuming too much of tea can lead to sleep disruption, restlessness, anxiety and increased heart rate.
  4. Possibility of Miscarriage: Pregnant women should avoid tea completely, as its caffeine content can harm the development of foetus and pose a threat of miscarriage.
  5. Prostate Cancer: This is the worst side effect of drinking too much tea. Research has shown that men who are heavy tea drinkers may be at higher risk for prostate cancer than those who don't.
  6. Cardiovascular problems: The caffeine in the tea is not good for the cardiovascular system and those having heart ailments or are recovering from cardiovascular disorders should avoid tea.

YOU SHOULD PACK GUM IN YOUR HOSPITAL BABY BAG.

There is a wealth of advice parents-to-be receive on what to pack in the baby bag but here is a strange one. How about a pack of chewing gum? A recent study published in the Journal of Maternal-Foetal & Neo-Natal Medicine found that it could have important benefits. It analysed seventeen international studies to discover chewing gum after surgery led to faster recovery in gastro-intestinal function. For those who were instructed to chew gum immediately after delivery, followed by three times a day for thirty minutes each time, a much quicker and more comfortable recovery was experienced.
Mums who chewed gum experienced ease in flatulence, reduction in vomiting and feeling nauseous. New mums who chewed gum regularly found their appetite returned sooner.

NATURAL C-SECTIONS NEW WAY TO GIVE BIRTH.

Typically, babies can enter the world in one of two ways: vaginal birth or surgical delivery. But now, doctors are hailing the benefits of a 'natural' variation of the caesarian section. Known as a 'gentle' caesarian, child-birth experts are increasingly advocating a technique, which mimics normal child-birth by allowing the baby to emerge at their own pace, rather than being pulled out by a doctor. Instead, the new mother is encouraged to watch their baby being born through a small surgical incision as the child wriggles itself through the gap. Now, doctors are saying that this approach can help women bond better with their children because they can hold them without them having to be whisked away and cleaned, the Daily Mail reports.
Dr. Felicity Plaat, a consultant anaesthetist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, says that the technique is also associated with increased breastfeeding rates. While a 'normal' c-section can take as little as two-minutes with the cord cut immediately, a 'natural' option means the baby is given time to wriggle free as the mother watches. When the baby is born, it's placed straight on the mother's chest, with the cord still attached. Experts feel this method mitigates the feeling of inadequacy women feel after a c-section.

A PAINLESS, PERMANENT SOLUTION FOR UNWANTED HAIR.

Everybody wants to look attractive and beautiful. It is definitely desirable to have troughs of hair on your head, but the same hair sprouting in all the wrong places like ears and nostrils in men and upper lip, cheeks and chin in women makes one self-conscious. Sporting a moustache may be cool and macho for a man, but the same hair on a woman makes it unsightly and awkward. Regular trips to the parlour or saloon might address these issues temporarily, but one fails to notice that as you keep waxing and threading, hair growth increases and becomes thicker with every waxing session. Apart from that skin in those areas becomes dark and rough.
Hair removal techniques like waxing, shaving, etc., produce short-term results and long-term difficulties. Although the traditional electrolysis hair removal method is still available as an option at a few beauty clinics, it is outdated and rarely practiced outside India. The method is painful, short-lasting and if done carelessly, could possibly result in permanent scarring. Moreover, not all types of lasers are suitable for Indian skin or to reduce hair permanently. Making things worse, improper sterilisation can lead to infections, HIV and Hepatitis-B.
"Having the right laser knowledge, training and experience is crucial", says Dr. V. Ravindranath Reddy, of Clinic 2000, "Ruby, Alexandrite and IPL lasers are suitable for European and American skin, but can damage Indian skin as they are short wavelength lasers. The 1064 nm wavelength Nd Yag laser that is used in most beauty clinics is neither a healthy or long-lasting solution since the laser's energy is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood and not by the melanin in the hair follicle".
But you can put aside your worries now as a permanent solution is now available. The 'E plus Diode Laser' hair removal is the ultimate permanent solution for unwanted hair. The process is gentle, fast, affordable, highly effective and above all painless.
"The E plus Diode Laser is unique, as it is the only laser that is US FDA approved and European CE certified, for safe and permanent hair removal for both fair and dark skin. Its 810 nm wavelength energy is absorbed only by the melanin in the hair and hair follicle, resulting in total and permanent destruction of the hair root, thereby removing the hair permanently. The 'Chill Tip' of 'E plus Diode Laser' makes the treatment virtually painless. This laser is equipped with RE, which helps in getting rid of even grey hair to a great extent", Dr. Ravidranath explains.

YOGA REVERSES STRESS-CAUSING DNA REACTIONS.

Practicing meditation, yoga and Tai Chi daily may not only relax you but can also reverse the molecular reactions in the DNA that causes stress as well as boost well-being, according to a study. The findings, by researchers from United Kingdom

STAY ALERT NOW TO AVOID CANCER AT OLD AGE.

Every living cell is prone to cancer. Cancer cells are cells gone wrong which don't adhere to the normal cell growth and death rate. As per nature's law, new cells form from existing cells. The rate of cell division is more when a person is young and decreases with age. In older people, new cells form only to replace existing cells. Cancer cells divide more rapidly and evade programmed cell death. This results in formation of lumps. Some cancers which are confined to a particular organ are benign while others that spread to other organs of the body are malignant. Changes in lifestyle, stress, hormonal treatments, family history and certain viral and bacterial infections may lead to cancer. According to a survey by National Cancer Institute (NCI) most of the new cases of cancer (around 60 percent) are being diagnosed in people over 65 years and is responsible for 70 percent  mortality rate. Old people are ten times more prone to cancer compared to young people. They are prone to many cancers like colon cancer, rectal cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer and breast cancer. High blood pressure, thyroid complications, blockages in heart valves are some of the triggers. Since age is the main factor, personalised treatment is required for these patients, taking into account their physical, mental, financial, social and family conditions. What they need most is family and friends' support.
Apart from the triggers mentioned above, other triggers of cancer in the aged are:
  • Addiction to smoking and alcohol;
  • Multiple sexual partners;
  • Reduced Immunity;
  • Hormonal Imbalance;
  • Abnormalities in cell division, which manifests at later age;
  • Exposure to chemicals;
  • Treatments for other diseases.
Those who suffer from Werner Syndrome, Alzheimer's, AIDS, etc. are more prone to cancer. In women, higher levels of estrogen may lead to breast cancer, uterus cancer and endometrium cancer. Late-onset menopause is another cause of concern. In men, higher levels of testosterone may lead to prostate cancer. Women beyond 35 years need to undergo screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer while men who are more than fifty years, need to undergo screening for prostate cancer. Healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet from a younger age, and screening tests to stay alert about any physical changes is advisable.

GRUB FOR THE BABY.

Writer of the book "Pregnancy Nutrition" Rujuta Diwekar addresses three myths about eating during pregnancy:
(1). You can eat whatever now that you are allowed to gain weight: Obviously not true. Eating right is more crucial now than ever, for both a healthy pregnancy and your child. Also, you don't need to eat for two, instead you need to become more attuned to your hunger signals and eat as per appetite. So no distractions when eating.
(2). You have to eat a lot of protein: You don't exclusively get a certain nutrient from a specific food. Food delivers much more than a single or multiple nutrients. One of the things that matters most with the protein is its digestibility ration, and a thumb rule to increase that is to eat protein-rich foods as part of a complete meal and not on its own. So back to eating wholesome meals and not as per food groups.
(3). You can get Folic acid only from the pill: The key here is to not entirely depend on the supplement but use it as an aid to support folic acid intake from natural foods Beetroot, seasonal vegetables and an under-valued source is cooked lentils - moong, black-eyed beans and the likes. Vitamin B 12 is required for Vitamin B 9 (folic acid) to carry out its functions, so don't forget the dahi, chhaas, and again the soaked, sprouted and well-cooked lentils. The following is an edited excerpt from Diwekar's latest book, "Pregnancy Notes: Before, During and After".
Eat Food That:
(1). Is easy to cook and digest.
(2). Hydrates and works as a natural antacid.
(3). Provides easy-to-assimilate amino acids .
(4). Is rich in micro-nutrients like iron, folic acid, calcium.
Rule 1-Easy To Cook And Digest: This is probably the core of the food rules. Digestion slows down during pregnancy, and the process of cooking ensures that food is actually pre-digested even before you begin to chew it. In terms of nutrition science, cooking of grains and vegetables helped remove the anti-nutrients from them, these re-molecules like phytates and oxalates that exist naturally but come in the way of nutrient absorption. So no salads, no juices and chew on your fruit when it's ripe. Also, fresh, local food and time-tested recipes are by default easy to cook and nutritious at the same time. The foods that are easy to cook and digest are also the ones that are hydrating and keep acidity down.
Rule 2-Hydrates and works as a Natural Antacid: Here are a few ingredients that can tilt the balance in your favour when taken right, but can leave you dehydrated and, therefore, acidic or sick when consumed in excess amounts or in wrong proportions and combinations:
(a). Sugar:It is useful and helpful for the body in certain combinations but in high amounts will leave you feeling drained out. Also, the origin matters. Sugar from sugarcane is good, but that from corn (high fructose corn syrup) is not. Sugar is like that falls from the sky: if it falls in muddy waters, it becomes muddy. Unfortunately, a lot of pregnancy foods' fall in that category. So sugar in biscuits, juices, cereals, flavoured milks and other packaged 'health' drinks is like muddy water, don't have it. And when this same drop falls in your chai, it's fine, drinks is like muddy water, don't have it. And when this same drop falls in your chai, it's fine, drink it. Or, for that matter, if it falls in your lad doo or kheer.
Quick Checklist:
--Good Sugar: Sugarcane and its derivatives, all seasonal fruits, coconut water, homemade sherbets, homemade laddoos, barfis and halwa, sugar used as seasoning while cooking certain dishes, jaggery and ghee or jaggery and saunf post meals.
--Bad Sugar: Cakes, pastries, biscotti, biscuits, ready-made sherbets and juices (tetra-packed or stylishly glass-packed), chocolates, brownies, ice creams, icing, ready-made cereal, protein biscuits, protein or other health powders that one mixes in milk (the ones with a typical profile of 9 gms protein, 28 gms carbs and 20 gms sugars per serving - that's four tsp in just one drink), cup-cakes, etc.
(b). Salt: Again, the namak in your nimbu pani will hydrate but most stuff that comes out of packets is a bad idea. So are options like popcorn while watching a movie or those chips that you are eating since you are allowed to gain weight now. Like sugar, it is not salt itself but the company it is keeping which is going to make it a good or a bad boy. So anything over the counter is a big no, but a home-made bhaji or mathri will do the trick.
During pregnancy, the serum sodium levels actually fall as the blood volume goes up, and this could well be one of the reasons why women crave salty stuff. Earlier, they would mostly end up eating imli with some salt or pickel, both healthy and rich in nutrients and friendly bacteria enhancers. But now, as the palate has been trained to eat on the go and consume processed stuff, they mostly crave chips and chicken wings. If you have been eating junk, expect an exaggerated effect during pregnancy. The unrefined or Himalayan or natural or coloured salt is especially good because it is not just sodium chloride but carries within itself multiple minerals and phyto-nutrients (which give it a particular taste, smell, colour and consistency) and other electrolytes too, like potassium and magnesium. These salts, often used in fasts, are great to keep the pH level of the body in place, beat bloating and prevent fluctuations in BP.
Quick Checklist:
--Good Salt: Pickle, papad, sherbet, khara singdana or the practice of putting kala namak (black salt) on fruits like guava, star fruit, amla, etc. Regular use of salt in cooking, salt in bathing water, the occasional pakoda or wada made at home.
--Bad Salt: Packaged and processed biscuits, chips (even the vegan, kala chips), packaged salted nuts, processed cheese, butter, outisde stuff like Chinese takeaway, samosa, pizza, popcorn, burgers, etc., basically anything that is sold in a franchise model in malls and on highways.
(c). Caffeine: The cup or two of chai or coffee with sugar will not harm, but caffeine crawls up from many unseen places - chocolates, cup-cakes, energy drinks and colas - and its' through these things that it will leave you dehydrated. So while you don't need to kick the cuppa, you must follow the basics: (i). No chai of coffee first thing in the morning, start with a fruit or dry fruit. (ii). No chai or coffee as a replacement to a meal. (iii). No chai or coffee as a late-night meal post dinner like when you step out to meet friends for for a drive, etc.
All the above are applicable also to green tea or white tea or any other tea. Basically, the thing to keep an eye on is your urine: If it semlls of tea, coffee, you are overdoing it and need to cut back; especially the invisible sources as mentioned earlier.
Rule 3-Provides Easy-To Assimilate Amino Acids: Do you need more protein when you are pregnant? Yes, to support the growth of the foetus and for your own body's needs. But the only way your body will have access to more protein is if it comes in the form of easy-to-assimilate amino acids. Along with amino acids in foods, the other nutrients that improve protein synthesis are essential fats, like those found in dairy and dairy products, minerals like those found in nuts, and phyto-nutrients, like the ones found in vegetables. It's really about distributing your protein intake through the day and consuming it as part of a nutrient-rich meal versus just ingesting protein on its own. A pre-sleep protein drink that is also rich in fat can further amplify protein synthesis and that's why it was common practice to feed an expecting mother a cup of milk as a bedtime snack.
Rule 4-Naturally Rich In Micro-Nutrients: Micro-nutrients like folic acid, calcium and iron we all know of, but a healthy pregnancy needs an array of micro-nutrients, from the phytosterols to lycopenes, the flavonoids to the phyto-estrogens and the resveratol to antho-cyanins. These come into our diet through almost a secret route - the pickle, the chutney, the laddoo. And if you are going by conventional information on diet, you are most likely to miss out on them. Let's look at how:

  • You may be told to consume more iron or folic acid and you must just rely on pills or drown yourself in a bowl of spinach everyday without realising that a handful of cashews or an aliv (garden cress) laddoo will load you on both the folate and the iron and that too without constipating you.
  • Or you may avoid pickle because you fear that it has 'too much salt' and then land up missing out on many essential nutrients from the pickle, especially Vitamin K2. You may have never heard of Vitamin K2, or you may be completely unaware of its role in preventing bone loss and osteoporosis, but what doesn't mean that you won't benefit from it.
  • Or you could be loading up on high-fibre packaged cereals or oats because you have been told it's healthier, little knowing that the phytate from it is going to block the absorption of many minerals in your body, more importantly that of magnesium. And then what we often overlook, but our grandmoms didn't, is that Vitamin K2 and magnesium are critical for Vitamin D absorption.
