There is a wealth of advice parents-to-be receive on what to pack in the baby bag but here is a strange one. How about a pack of chewing gum? A recent study published in the Journal of Maternal-Foetal & Neo-Natal Medicine found that it could have important benefits. It analysed seventeen international studies to discover chewing gum after surgery led to faster recovery in gastro-intestinal function. For those who were instructed to chew gum immediately after delivery, followed by three times a day for thirty minutes each time, a much quicker and more comfortable recovery was experienced.
Mums who chewed gum experienced ease in flatulence, reduction in vomiting and feeling nauseous. New mums who chewed gum regularly found their appetite returned sooner.
