A BILLION HEARTS BEAT FOR CARDIAC AWARENESS.

Heart disease is a major cause of death across the world. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease. This condition is a result of plaque buildup in arteries that makes the arteries hard and narrow. It is preventable to a great extent; all you need to do is identify and treat it early. Unfortunately the symptoms go un-diagnosed or ignored for long periods. Coronary bypass surgery is a procedure undertaken to divert the flow of blood around the section of a blocked or partially blocked artery. By creating a new pathway to the heart, coronary bypass surgery improves blood flow to the heart muscle. The year 2017 commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the first coronary bypass surgery ever performed. This procedure is considered one of medicine's greatest discoveries and has helped save millions of lives, worldwide, over the years. Advancements in technology and replacing stents with arterial grafts taken from other parts of the body, have contributed towards improved efficacy, faster recovery and enhanced longevity.
Indians are genetically prone to heart diseases. The increasing risk of CAD among youth in India can be attributed to high incidence of diabetes, increasing stress levels, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy food habits and smoking. Every year, about 2,00,000 bypass surgeries and 4,00,000 angioplasty procedures are undertaken in around 350 hospitals across the country.
